I DD'd an '05 for about a year. Fucking loved every second of it, even though it was that awful tiptronic. It didn't matter to me because I was only 17 at the time. Still, so damn fun, never had an issue with it.

I just realized that I have virtually no opinion what-so-ever regarding the Boxster.

This revelation is quite shocking to me.

The first Boxsters were awful and cheap, and the snow traction is pathetic for a car made in Finland. Also, there is no way to access the engine except on a hoist. Hard to believe a car like that could save Porsche's life and that Toyota was involved (they showed Porsche how to streamline some shit, like sharing headlights with the 996)

Newer Boxsters got better, to the point that Porsche has to cripple them from the factory.

My dad wants one so bad, but forgets that exists a lot. I should remind him to buy one before the prices shoot up!

It's a convertible, so naturally, I like the Cayman better, but...the hardtop mounts on the inside, IIRC. Would totally buy and leave the hardtop on. There was a red one for sale at the time when I didn't know if they were going to total the Lulzcer or not, too. Very. Tempting.

Kinja'd!!!

I have mild want for a Spec Boxster, too.

That engine makes me nervous, but I can't help it. I...I....Iiiiiiii....it's a stupid little poop Porsche. I need them all.

Seriously!

Prices WILL go up.

Will he break his no used cars rule for it??

I think there was a Jalopnik FP post on it. Pretty sure it was Jalopnik, but may have been other site. Either way it was awesome. It talked about how amazingly awesome the car is. It's less practical but it doesn't matter because it is so damn fun.

I love them. The older one's are overly attractive, but damned if they aren't a blast.

I sincerely think I will own one someday...maybe. If I can't get an R8, I'll settle for a Boxster/Cayman

Kinja'd!!!1

There's engine access from a hatch above the engine, a hatch behind the seats in the cabin, and from the rear fender wells. You certainly don't need a hoist. The engine can't even be lifted up out of the car. You simply jack up the car and lower the engine if you need to get to the internals.

Intermediate shaft bearings tend to nuke themselves in spectacular fashion and (less common) some have issues with the block construction itself.

Luckily, most people have these issues when the car is <60K or so, so the common thought is that a higher-mileage Box is less likely to grenade if it hasn't done anything funky by then. But then you're getting a high-mileage entry-level Porsche, and, uh, yeah.

Would still hoon all day, err'day. Yes.

also random car thought not related to porsches at all (as they never released a single clutch sequential manual for the street). i've written some about this topic on oppo posts i created but not sure if you saw them as they were a while ago.

i was driving the E90 M3 DCT home just now after a solid week of driving the 997 6MT.

it really solidified my thoughts on something that would sign insane to most (at least one person on oppo agreed with me but most wouldn't): flappy paddle gearboxes aren't the problem, DCTs are the problem.

transmissions such as SMG, F1 and E-Gear are fun because they are imperfect. they force you to shift the gears yourself to drive more smoothly. driving those cars in auto mode is terrible. the computer may be able to predict when to shift but it's still better if you control it so that you can decide whether to lay off the throttle a bit. and it's disconcerting when the computer shifts when you don't expect it because those transmissions don't have instant and drama-free mechanical shifts like the DCTs do.

DCTs are so damn good that driving in auto mode often makes a lot more sense than using the paddles. i swear my E90 can time when to shift better than my brain can in 99% of situations, whether while cruising or driving hard. with a DCT the human becomes redundant. the shifts are super smooth and when 7 gears are involved it's hard for the human brain to memorize the ideal shift points for max gas mileage when puttering around or max performance when driving hard. while it seems obvious to wait until redline to shift when driving hard it's still easier to let the computer do it when the engine revs insanely fast and the gear ratios are short. things are moving so fast that you're better off keeping your hands on the wheel and focusing on driving.

but with a 6 speed sequential gearbox you're almost never better off letting the computer shift for you. which keeps you engaged. they really do feel just like a 6MT except you use the paddles to shift instead of your foot and right hand. it may not be as engaging as a stick but it's still engaging. and many of them make wonderful mechanical noises when gear changes happen. you feel like you're driving a race car with a sequential 6 speed box (as many have).

i think we will end up mourning both the stick and the 6 speed sequential boxes once the DCT revolution is complete. actually some of us like me that have owned a robotized 6 speed will mourn them more as sticks will (hopefully) always be available with certain models. but the single clutch 6 speed will be dead for SURE once the Aventador gets a DCT or the replacement of the Aventador comes out with one.

DCTs are definitely the most boring of the non-slushbox and non-CVT transmissions. especially for commuting around in the city.

where i do like DCTs is on the highway when there is traffic or if i had a chance to drive a sports car on track competitively. my E90 is all business. if i need to drive to a meeting and might hit traffic the E90 is the right choice all the way. if i need to drive to LA and deal with their godawful traffic the E90 is also the right choice. just put it in auto and focus on all the hazards of driving. and driving on track would be great if lap times really matter as your mind can really focus on racing lines when both hands are on the wheel and that's all that matters.

goodbye sweet flawed robot 6. i for one will miss you.

And I won't be able to autox it, or add lightness by stripping the interior, or modify it, and theres no handbrake, and its a slushbox, and there isn't enough power to do reverse donuts. So it is the perfect car for anyone who is dead.

It can get kind of exciting especially when trying to go up hills and bridges since you have to floor it and goes all VTEC KICKED IN but it is still a pain to try and overtake something like an elantra or a cobalt.
